the bullet

据说19世纪早期，麻醉剂还没有普及，病人或士兵在做手术的时候，只能咬一颗子弹来忍痛，“bite the bullet”的说法就源于此，意思是强迫自己做不喜欢的事儿，或是是渡过难关。 18世纪末期有个类似的说法“chew a bullet”。
